A Natural Cure: Damlatas Cave – Alanya
Damlatas Cave was discovered in 1948 quite by accident while mining for the building of the harbour and it is the first cave which was opened to tourism in Turkey. The cave is on the west coast of the historical Alanya Castle. There is a 50 m passage at the entrance of the cave. You can come to a cylindrical space after the gateway with 15 meters height. After here, you can walk into the bottom of the cave.
Name of Cave “Damlataş” comes from the stalactite which exists by water droplets. “Damla” means a drop and “taş” means stone in Turkish. Therefore it is called Damlataş Cave. The stalactite and stalagmites inside the cave were formed in 15 thousand years. Besides its fascinating beauty, the cave is famous with its air which is beneficial to asthma patients.
Following the rumours that asthma patients benefited from breathing the air in the cave, scientists analysed a sample of the air to verify the fact that the air was indeed beneficial to patients suffering from non-allergic asthma. They found that the air in the cave contains 10 to 12 times more carbon dioxide than normal air. Asthma patients who come by doctor’s control stay in the cave for 21 days as a cure. In 2014, 4000 patients were cured in Damlatas Cave.
Weather of the cave doesn’t change during seasons, the temperature is 22 C0, damp is %95, constant pressure is 760mm. In the weather of cave, there are %71 nitrogen, % 20,5 oxygen, 2,5/10.000 (two and a half to ten thousand) CO2 and some radioactive ion.

Damlatas Cave is located in Alanya which is a beautiful holiday centre with its beautiful sandy beaches and modern hotels. The cave is located 4 kilometres from the Alanya marina. The closest place to the Cave is the Yeni Yüz Yıl Atatürk Park.
How to Go To Damlatas Cave?
Since the cave is located in an area that is very close to Alanya city centre, people usually prefer buses or take a taxi to get to the cave. It will take around 10 minutes to arrive in the cave from Alanya city centre.
